Is a Mulberry Tree’s Root System Invasive? What to Know Before You Plant

Now, here’s where you’ll find mulberries compared to the real troublemakers: they’re vigorous, yes, but they’re generally considered less aggressive than silver maple or willow trees, which have become almost notorious for destroying infrastructure. That said, “less aggressive than a willow” is still pretty vigorous, so we’re not off the hook just because they’re not the worst offenders.

How Far Should You Plant a Mulberry from Your House?

This is the question that matters most, and the answer is clearer than you might think.

Most extension services and arborists recommend planting a standard, full-size mulberry tree at least 15 to 20 feet away from foundations, driveways, sidewalks, and septic or sewer lines. If you’re planting one of the larger-growing seedling varieties, push that distance up toward 25 feet or more to be safe.

That’s not because mulberries are uniquely destructive—it’s because the root spread on a mature tree commonly extends one and a half to three times the width of its canopy. Picture your mulberry five years from now, shading a good 30 feet of your yard. Those roots might be reaching out just as far.

What About Underground Pipes and Septic Lines?

This is the other big worry, and I want to ease your mind a little here: roots don’t bore through solid, intact pipes. I know that sounds like it can’t possibly be true, but it is.

What actually happens is that a pipe already has a crack, a loose joint, or a small leak—something that lets moisture escape. Roots are drawn to that escaping moisture like a homing signal, and they grow into the existing opening rather than through the pipe itself. This is why older clay or cast-iron sewer lines are far more vulnerable than modern sealed PVC—the older systems have more weak points for roots to exploit.

Still, this is why that 15-20 foot distance recommendation matters so much for septic and sewer lines. The farther away the tree is, the lower your risk, and if you’re planting in an area with older underground infrastructure, knowing where those lines run before you dig is essential.

What If You Want to Plant Closer? Use a Root Barrier

Sometimes you don’t have 20 feet. Maybe your yard is small, or that one sunny spot is against the house, or you’ve already got your heart set on a location. I understand. I’ve been there.

A root barrier is a standard, effective solution that arborists and landscapers use all the time. It’s a vertical panel installed in a trench between the tree and whatever structure or hardscaping you’re protecting. The barrier doesn’t stop roots from growing—it redirects them downward instead of laterally. It’s not foolproof, but done properly, it significantly reduces the risk of damage.

One More Thing: Removing a Mulberry Tree

If you do have a mature mulberry that needs to come out, I need to warn you about something I’ve learned the hard way: mulberry roots regenerate aggressively from suckers when they’re cut or damaged.

Removing the tree itself isn’t the end of the job. That root system will keep sending up new shoots for one to several years unless you grind out the stump and major roots or treat the remaining roots with an herbicide.
